On Sunday 8 July 1973, at the height of a terrific storm, Singaporean cargo ship Cherry Venture ran aground on Teewah Beach. The officers and crew escaped unharmed, but the vessel could not be saved.
For 33 years it lay rusting into the sands of Teewah Beach - a magnet for tourists from around the world.
In 2007, with the last hazardous remains of the Cherry Venture removed from the beach, I was engaged by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service - the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM), to research the story of the Cherry Venture and write the text for this sign that now stands on the site of the old shipwreck.
